How to File ITR Online for AY 2026-27: Step-by-Step Guide

Updated 13 Oct 2026

Filing your Income Tax Return (ITR) is mandatory if your gross total income exceeds the basic exemption limit, or if you want to claim a refund of TDS.

1. Keep these documents ready

  • PAN and Aadhaar (linked)
  • Form 16 from your employer
  • Form 26AS and Annual Information Statement (AIS)
  • Bank interest certificates
  • Proofs of deductions like 80C and 80D (for old regime)
  • Capital gains statements from your broker, if any

2. Choose the right ITR form

ITR-1 is for resident individuals with salary, one house property and other income up to ₹50 lakh. ITR-2 covers capital gains, and ITR-3 or ITR-4 cover business and professional income.

3. Pick your tax regime

The new regime is the default. Compare both regimes using the exbudget Income Tax Calculator before you file.

4. Fill details and compute tax

Enter your income, deductions and taxes paid. exbudget computes your tax payable or refund automatically.

5. Submit and e-verify

After filing, e-verify within 30 days using Aadhaar OTP, net banking or a bank account EVC. Your return is not complete until it is verified.
